By offering an expansive 11-42T range, it gives you the "crawler gear" needed for loaded climbs and steep singletrack, while maintaining the robust, thicker chain and cogs of a 9Speed system. This means your indexing stays perfect longer, and your drivetrain is far more resistant to mud, grit, and accidental derailleur bumps than thinner, high-speed alternatives.
